Northwest Outdoor Center is Seattle’s on-the-water kayak shop on Lake Union, offering year-round kayak and paddleboard rentals, classes, kayak sales, and gear. Rentals run on a 90-minute base rate with an hourly rate kicking in afterward, pro-rated every 5 minutes. Single kayaks run $36 for 90 minutes or $24/hour after, double kayaks run $46 or $32/hour, triple kayaks run $54 or $36/hour, and paddleboards run $38 or $24/hour. Only basic paddling skills are needed to rent, and staff can teach the basics on the dock before launch. Rentals run year-round, weather permitting, with the last rental launching 90 minutes before closing.
Beyond rentals, NWOC runs a full slate of classes, including the four-session Fundamentals of Sea Kayaking course covering everything needed to paddle independently on Puget Sound, separate Strokes & Rescue classes focused on boat control and self/assisted rescue, and private lessons customized to a paddler’s experience and goals. New for 2026, the business also offers Skills Memberships in two tiers, giving regular paddlers structured coaching and small-group practice to build skills over time. For frequent renters, a Yearly Rental Pass is available as an alternative to per-visit rates.
NWOC is also a full retailer of Delta Kayaks, offering free 20-minute demos or longer hourly test rentals, along with touring kayak sales, used kayaks and gear, and kayak delivery around Puget Sound. The shop stocks a wide range of paddling gear including PFDs, paddles, spray skirts, drysuits, wetsuits, and helmets from brands like Kokatat, NRS, Immersion Research, and WRSI.
