Fishing Magician Charters is a family owned and operated business based in Shell Beach, Louisiana, just 30 minutes from New Orleans, run by the well-known “Fishing Magician,” Captain Johnny Nunez. Johnny began working at Campo’s Marina in the 1960s, cleaning and maintaining rental cypress skiffs, and his uncanny ability to catch fish in any condition soon earned him his nickname. For generations, the Nunez family has lived and fished the bayous of St. Bernard Parish.
Two of Johnny’s sons, Captains John and Jason Nunez, now work alongside their father, taking out customers and carrying forward the family tradition. The Fishing Magician targets Speckled Trout and Redfish through Lake Borgne, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, and Breton Sound, an intricate system of bayous, canals, bays, and open-water oil fields holding nearly every saltwater coastal species imaginable. As Captain Johnny puts it: “I don’t believe that there is any place, anywhere, that can top the fishing in this area. For speckled trout and redfish there is nothing else like it.”
Trips run in a 25-foot Privateer with a 350 Yamaha, offering a smooth, comfortable ride across the sparkling waters of Shell Beach. Packages include a licensed captain, fuel and oil, and all standard charter equipment. For larger groups, the business works with additional dependable, licensed and insured captains who share Johnny’s philosophy: “That the customers must have a good time and catch fish doing it.”
